Education Credits

For parity, recognized educational activities within each Education Category are assigned a credit value.

The credit value assigned to specific educational activities is defined by PSOM, rather than by individual teachers, course directors, or departments. Credit reflects time spent in preparation, exam grading/feedback, and evaluation of education-related activities. Educational activities (specifically online educational activities) receiving royalties are not eligible for credit.

Focus on the Learners You Most Enjoy

Education Activities

Faculty may engage in as many of the categories as they wish, but should pick 1-2 areas to emphasize. Promotion at the Associate level will expect that faculty have high quality engagement in at least 2 areas. Promotion to professor will expect an explicit understanding of the impact of one’s teaching on trainees, programs, courses etc.

Learner Evaluations

In some cases, your learners may be prompted to evaluate you in one of the following areas: lecturing, facilitating small groups, or clinical teaching. These evaluations can be viewed via the Teaching Evaluation Data system (TED)*. Twice a year, you will be emailed TED results. You can also check your TED results by going through My.Med. You will need your Pennkey.

*Please note: you will not see the evaluations of any teaching event unless you have more than three evaluators.

Watch Out for the Myths Related to Teaching

  • One bad evaluation can tank a career
  • PSOM COAP favors some teaching more than others
  • Faculty does not need to teach in the first few years
  • Promotion dossiers include teaching evaluations that go back to year one on faculty
  • I don’t need to keep track of my teaching events

Impact Examples

  • Direct teaching (lectures, ...)

What is a Holistic Review?

Each candidate for promotion will have generated a highly unique set of contributions that will be independently evaluated. This independent review highlights the critical need for the Personal Statement, a well-described career narrative that identifies significant achievements and, when appropriate, mitigating circumstances.
