Education Credits
For parity, recognized educational activities within each Education Category are assigned a credit value.
The credit value assigned to specific educational activities is defined by PSOM, rather than by individual teachers, course directors, or departments. Credit reflects time spent in preparation, exam grading/feedback, and evaluation of education-related activities. Educational activities (specifically online educational activities) receiving royalties are not eligible for credit.

AC, CE, and Tenure track faculty must earn 100 credits/year. Clinical faculty must earn 50 credits per year.

Focus on the Learners You Most Enjoy
Education Activities
Faculty may engage in as many of the categories as they wish, but should pick 1-2 areas to emphasize. Promotion at the Associate level will expect that faculty have high quality engagement in at least 2 areas. Promotion to professor will expect an explicit understanding of the impact of one’s teaching on trainees, programs, courses etc.

Learner Evaluations
In some cases, your learners may be prompted to evaluate you in one of the following areas: lecturing, facilitating small groups, or clinical teaching. These evaluations can be viewed via the Teaching Evaluation Data system (TED)*. Twice a year, you will be emailed TED results. You can also check your TED results by going through My.Med. You will need your Pennkey.
*Please note: you will not see the evaluations of any teaching event unless you have more than three evaluators.

Learner Evaluations
For lecturing, facilitating, and clinical teaching that is not caputred and reported via TED, you may choose to use the approved evaluation form.
Example Penn Learners
Undergraduate and Post-Bacc Students
Medical Students
Residents and Fellows
Post-doctoral Fellows or Trainees
Graduate Students
Preprofessional Students (NPs, PAs, Pharmacists, etc.)
Community members taught at secondary schools, community centers, places of worship, etc.
*Interdisciplinary lectures and facilitating small groups for non-Penn trainees can be used to meet up to 50% of teaching requirement per year
Penn-Affiliated Learners
Educational effort must be with Penn learner populations.* This includes instruction, assessment, and other educational effort provided to any learner population affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Medicine, CHOP, and any educational programs or activities sponsored by Penn.

What is a Holistic Review?
Each candidate for promotion will have generated a highly unique set of contributions that will be independently evaluated. This independent review highlights the critical need for the Personal Statement, a well-described career narrative that identifies significant achievements and, when appropriate, mitigating circumstances.
Holistic Review of Impact
Evidence of continuous scholarly productivity
Research consistent with PSOM’s mission with an upward trajectory of achievements over time
Contributions to the development of innovative approaches to diagnosis, treatment or prevention of disease, technology applications, and new models of care
Community engagement is considered when it is closely aligned with the candidate’s academic work
